I recently descaled my espresso machine—removed the limescale buildup that hinders efficiency. How might we descale the returning president from our psyches?

Donald Trump has emotionally consumed our minds for the last four years, polarizing communities and remaking much of the political landscape into his image. As the next chapter in the Trump saga begins, how do we disentangle Trump from our collective psyche? Here are some steps to consider.

Recognizing the Problem

Trump has embedded himself in our conversations, media, even how we view one another. Whether you see him as a hero or a villain, his presence has intensified existing divisions and entrenched tribalism. Recognizing this influence is essential to moving forward.

Promoting Civil Discourse

The Trump era’s legacy includes a fall-of-the-cliff in respectful discourse. Let’s try to replace toxic rhetoric with constructive and civil dialogue. Conversations that prioritize empathy and understanding over insults and blame can help rebuild trust. We don’t have to agree on everything, but we can commit to disagreeing respectfully.

Addressing the Root Causes

Trump’s rise was fueled by cultural division, economic disparity, and widespread distrust in government. Let’s acknowledge the reality of these issues and engage with leaders, asking them to promote policies that reduce inequality, ensure fair representation, rebuild faith in the system of government, and reduce the appeal of divisive figures. Division helps no one. It simply perpetuates the problems.

Promoting Media Literacy

Take a step back from media that obsessively reports every detail of Trump-related drama. Engaging with and reacting to social media posts solidifies his supporters’ views and fuels outrage among others. Let’s try to promote media literacy. Teaching people to discern fact from opinion and avoid echo chambers will reduce the impact of disinformation.

Recommitting to Ethical Values

Trump’s tenure often undermined ethical boundaries, leaving many questioning the integrity of leadership. Let’s try to restore faith in our collective values like honesty, accountability, and the rule of law. These principles are not partisan but the foundation of a functioning democracy. Acknowledging leaders who exemplify these traits can shift the focus from personalities to principles.

Cultivating Resilience

The emotional impact of Trump cannot be overstated. Many Americans feel trapped in a cycle of outrage and despair. Promoting resilience involves learning to manage our emotional responses to political events and rhetoric that frequently emphasize the negative. Focusing on long-term goals and progress often happens gradually.

Focus on Solutions Rather than Personalities

Reducing his control in public discourse is essential in freeing ourselves from Trump’s influence. It means focusing on solutions rather than personalities. The more we focus on addressing challenges—climate change, healthcare, education, economic disparity—the less room for divisive figures to dominate the conversation.

Being Patient

While descaling my espresso maker takes only a few minutes, retraining our minds to move away from negative thinking is no quick fix—it’s a gradual process. Undoing Trump’s influence requires a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. Progress may be slow, but it’s possible if we remain committed to the process.

Coming to terms with Trump is not about erasing the past or the present, but learning from it for the future. It’s about acknowledging how his presidency affected us and taking deliberate steps to heal. By promoting civil discourse, recommitting to ethical values, addressing root causes, and acknowledging positive leadership in others, we can move toward a future defined by unity and progress rather than division. A healthier, more vibrant democracy is worth the effort.

May I have an Amen?
