God Has Chosen Donald Trump

At a Trump-backed Christian prayer rally on the National Mall in Washington on May 17, officially called Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise & Thanksgiving, thousands gathered beneath the familiar banners of faith, patriotism, and divine purpose. President Trump did not attend in person, but appeared by prerecorded video, reading Scripture and urging Americans to pray.

Among Trump’s most fervent Christian supporters, one refrain is heard again and again—not as an argument, but as a verdict:

“God has chosen Donald Trump.”

For some, the claim rests on a familiar biblical comparison: Cyrus, the Persian king named in Isaiah 45, whom God calls “his anointed” even though Cyrus was not one of God’s people. The lesson they draw is that God can use an imperfect ruler to fulfill a divine purpose. And because Donald Trump was the 45th president, the symbolism became irresistible to those eager to see divine intervention in politics.

But that is precisely the danger.

Once a political leader is declared chosen by God, moral judgment gives way to submission, impunity… license. Conduct no longer has to be defended. It only has to be sanctified.

A $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded “anti-weaponization” fund, created to compensate those who claim they were politically targeted, is now being eyed by Trump allies and January 6 defendants, including people convicted not by politicians but courts of law in connection with the attack on the Capitol. How can this happen?

God has chosen Donald Trump.

The Guardian reported that Capitol officers Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges sued over the $1.776 billion fund, alleging it was an improper taxpayer-funded vehicle benefiting Trump allies and January 6 figures. Hopefully, reason and truth will prevail.

A proposed $1 billion in taxpayer funding for White House security upgrades tied to Trump’s ballroom project—a project Trump once said would not use federal money—drew enough controversy that Senate Republicans said the ballroom funding had been removed from the spending bill. The White House said the money was for security-related improvements, while critics called the project an extravagant symbol of misplaced priorities.

Even after a federal judge questioned the administration’s rationale, the project continued to move forward due to security concerns.

While the Almighty has chosen Donald Trump, he needs to be protected.

A proposed 250-foot arch near Arlington would move forward without new congressional approval, the administration argues, because lawmakers authorized a similar monument a century ago, one that was never built. Survey crews have already begun testing at Memorial Circle on Columbia Island, a man-made island at the edge of Washington.

Trump supporters have mistaken a monument to vanity for a sign of providence.

The war with Iran has cost the United States $29 billion and counting, according to a senior Pentagon official cited by Reuters. The estimate had risen by $4 billion from the previous month.

But that, too, has been sanctified by supporters.

Who pays for this… class? We do, because…

God has chosen Donald Trump.

At some point, the question is no longer whether Donald Trump believes he has been chosen. The question is: why are so many people willing to excuse anything done in his name?

While they’re thumbing through their Bibles, Christian supporters might want to spend a moment with Proverbs 11:29:

“He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind.”
