Thank You

The power of those two simple words should not be underestimated.

A few weeks ago, a friend and I went to breakfast, and I picked up the check as a way of thanking her, not only for the support she constantly gives to our community, but for her compassionate heart that listens, empathizes, and serves as a role model to me and others.

Two days later, she sends me a “thank you” note for the breakfast and “sparkling conversation.”

Each year, my wife and I look forward to receiving a Christmas card from Sue. Her cursive handwriting is beautiful to read with a message that is always sincere.

Dear Jim and Caren

“Friendships are comprised of hundreds of magical pieces, each piece crafted by its own intrinsic value. Affection, wit, help, compassion, attentiveness, admiration – all these attributes and so many more.

“The times you have spent contributing to our happiness are some of the best, and most unique pieces. Together they build the remarkable gift of your friendship.”

Those words are the ultimate expression of thankfulness.

“Thank you” doesn’t ask for anything in return. It’s a simple act of appreciation, a way of acknowledging others for their generosity, kindness, wisdom, and actions that inspire us to do better, be better and appreciate each other more. Words of gratitude bind us together as friends and in times of need, help to heal the pain we all experience.

Thanking parents, friends, coworkers, even strangers is a sign of appreciation. It takes the focus off ourselves and recognizes that each of us is helped in so many ways that make our lives better, and happier. It tells others that they matter; that their words and actions matter.

Taking a moment to sincerely thank another helps us to stay humble, and God knows we could use a lot more humility today.

  1. Muchas Gracias, Senor!
Yes, gratitude, and a special handwritten note are so pleasant and exciting. I wish I had saved more of them years ago.
