While I am still decompressing from reading the Mueller report, I thought it was time to turn a corner — 180 degrees to be precise — and revisit some past commentaries that have, according to Google Analytics, received renewed interest.
Heroes are hard to come by. When Lt. General Hal Moore (co-author, We Were Soldiers Once… and Young), passed in February 2017, I recalled his inspiring leadership in the battle of I Drang Valley in Vietnam in a commentary fittingly called, “Stand Tall; Never quit; Drive on!”
“You’ve Got to be Kidding!” (Dec. 26, 2016), revisits the Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell romantic comedy, Overboard, and asks the question, what has this got to do with ethics? Research points to something positive!
In “Returning to Hadleyville,” (Dec. 14, 2012), I write about an ethical dilemma in the classic western, High Noon, and examine why the film’s message remains important for all of us today.
“Apollo 11,” another popular commentary from last month, does not discuss the feature-length documentary, but examines the news stories that both challenged and inspired us from 1969.
Finally, December 15, 2010, recalls my time with Fran Striker, Jr. and his dad’s work as principal creator and writer of The Lone Ranger – specifically the senior Striker’s own golden rules — which he called, The I Believes.
All these stories are meant to remind us that there is more right happening in the country than we may believe; that things like character, conscience and personal responsibility are among our most cherished core values.
I shall return!
Upcoming: What Happened at the Kentucky Derby?
Great article, Jim. I liked learning about moral intuitions. I’m going to watch Overboard again and my wife and I favorite Knotting Hill and Love Actually. It is time to realize there is a lot of good in this world. Thanks again, Jim.
